Species Accounts

The MARC Species Accounts give summaries of the status of rare and vagrant birds in Massachusetts.

Status in Massachusetts: This section provides a summary of all records from Massachusetts.

Map:
Each account includes a point map with the locations of records in Massachusetts plotted. We also make liberal use of links to eBird (www.ebird.org) to display the range of species.

Graphs:
We intend to provide seasonal graphs and annual graphs, but are still working on streamlining this process. We would welcome help on this.

Where to look in Massachusetts: In this section we give some tips on where to search for additional records in Massachusetts. Chance favors the prepared mind, and we actually have enough information about vagrancy in many species to be able to make reasonable predictions on where to find many species. In fact, several species on the Massachusetts review list are quite predictable as to where and when they occur (e.g., White-faced Storm-Petrel, Swallow-tailed Kite).

Status in the East:
This section puts Massachusetts records in context by summarizing the status in the rest of the East Coast.

Identification notes:
Here we provide some tips and references for identification, and point out pitfalls that are often considered by the MARC members when reviewing sightings.

References: The references selection provides citation for references mentioned in the text, providing areas to pursue for further interest.
Because certain references are used frequently, we abbreviate certain journals. these include:

AFN = Audubon Field Notes. The journal of Ornithological Record for North America (pre-1973). See also AFN, FN, NAB, and NASFN.
AB = American Birds. The journal of Ornithological Record for North America (1973-1994). See also AFN, FN, NAB, and NASFN.
BO = Bird Observer. The journal of Ornithological record for Massachusetts.
NAB = North American Birds. The journal of Ornithological Record for North America (1998-present). See also See also AFN, FN, NAB, and NASFN.
